| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome back to the Scriptures Are Real. |
| 0:16.1 | I'm your co-host Lamar Newmire and this is Kerry Mulestein. |
| 0:19.9 | Hi, how are you? |
| 0:22.6 | Good. Great to be back with you again. |
| 0:30.2 | And it's a good time. It's February. We're doing a little come follow me, following along. |
| 0:36.6 | And I wanted to just pull this up here real quick. Well, I'm going to talk with this. We're going to talk right now. |
| 0:43.8 | We just talked earlier about the covenant relationship and Abraham and so forth. We're going to talk about chapter 27 now. And this is kind of a, it's kind of a weird thing. It's something that we don't |
| 0:49.6 | quite fully understand, but it trips up a lot of students of the Old Testament. |
| 0:56.5 | And we're going to talk about the birthright. |
| 1:01.0 | First of all, before we get into the birthright, why is the birthright so important, |
| 1:02.9 | especially in these ancient cultures? |
| 1:04.9 | That's a great question. |
| 1:15.9 | And it's something that I think we misunderstand as just a modern culture, partially because we let the world influence us so much. |
| 1:21.1 | So from the world's point of view, leadership is all about the person who's leading and their power and their prestige, whereas from God's point of view, leadership is about service |
| 1:25.9 | and serving others. Even the Savior, |
| 1:28.0 | when James and John say they want to be on his right hand, his left hand, he says, you don't get it. |
| 1:33.5 | This is really, you're thinking like the princes of the world who want a lot of authority, |
| 1:39.0 | but he that is least among you should be the greatest, right? So that's the Savior's definition of |
| 1:43.6 | leadership, is to be the least, to be the servant. And the birthright child has the responsibility to take care of |
| 1:50.5 | everyone else in the family. And that's why they're given a double inheritance. So if someone gets |
| 1:55.1 | sold into slavery or bondage, they're supposed to buy them back. If they lose their land, they're |
| 1:59.7 | supposed to buy them back. If a spouse dies, they take care of the other spouse. They take care of the mother when the father dies and all of these things. So there's a lot of taking care of that they need to do. And so the birthright becomes really the extra endowment of abilities to be able to do that. |
