From being a sportsman in his youth to leaving it all behind to be a Kpop trainee, to touring the world with GOT7, to going solo and independent, Jackson Wang’s many phases could fill a memoir and he’s only 31.

Fresh from traipsing round Mumbai, India, Jackson joined us again — for the first time in five years — to discuss this new era of his career and his third album MAGICMAN 2. It’s a record preceded by a year off, a necessary reboot, a recalibration — in short, Jackson took control. His sound is different and so is his outlook. It’s a coming of age, a newfound appreciation of his parents; a record that after greater glimpses into the dark corners of human behaviour, and one that opens himself up in a way previous records have not. Many diary entries later, it’s a record that also makes peace with betrayal.

We discuss the machinations of GOT7 moving forward, fencing, his latest fashion venture, fandom and the idol system, and so much more. It’s a serious chat, but also one that’s full of jokes. And a fair few of them at our expense!

0:34.3	Are you kidding? One of the first things you said when you sat down here, though, was you talked about how long it's been? Five years. Since we've talked the last time. Yeah. Which was during COVID. And then previous to that day and was what year? 2019. Yeah, we talked in first. Yeah. September 2019. We were all in our 20s. Now we're getting old. We're all in our 30s.

1:03.0	When you think back, like, yes, time passes, but when you think back to your late 20s, what comes to mind?
1:09.0	No, man, I was just like speeding on a highway, having no navigation.
1:17.3	I was just doing things after things, just going hustling, you know?
1:21.9	And I think after 30s, you start to see, oh, this is what I want and this is who I am.
1:26.5	And the thing starts to slow down a little bit, and you get more neutral about everything. More neutral. What does that mean? That's like you don't get, the emotion does not get as dynamic as in the 20s compared to the 20s. I get that. Because you've seen a lot more. Yeah. Like you put. I'm sure you know, Dan. Yeah, I'm way up there. I'm much older than you guys. I get that. Because you've seen a lot more. Yeah. I'm sure you know, Dan.
