Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the prolific and inspirational screenwriter JACK THORNE!

An exciting one for us all, not least for Pip, as we hear the two check in on all matters of the small and big screen from a unique point of view. Jack has been a part of such a lot of incredible productions, and this will be a delight not only for those who know exactly who he is, but those who are unfamiliar - the themes and topics are universal in creativity and process. From ill children, to season 2 being the best season, DPP pod godfather Stephen Graham, writing in shades of grey and occasionally black and white, fiction informed by real life, the Shane Meadows sandbox, intricacies of roles, ratings, social realism and a selection of his works from Skins, to Shameless, to Help, to This Is England, it’s a packed and awesome one.

Welcome, welcome, welcome. This is the distraction pieces podcast episode 411 and this week's

0:07.5

conversation is one of my favorite of recent times. It's fantastic. I'll be honest with you. It's

0:15.2

with Jack Thorn and I've wanted to have Jack on for a while, but it's one of those weird things where

0:21.4

Jack's one of the people I'm a huge fan of yet it's similar to me really in that people who

0:30.0

know of me or people who are fans of me and my music really know about it and I really into it,

0:36.0

but people who aren't have never heard of it. It's not one of them where you're just aware and

0:40.4

Jack's in that world. I'll list a few other things he's written or written on. Let's start with

0:48.1

help the recent amazing piece with Stephen Graham and Jodie Caramel. We had to start a conversation

0:55.5

or with that in fact as it felt so topical, but then you can go for skins or you can go for

1:02.8

either this is England's series or you can go for virtues, his dark materials and so many amazing

1:11.8

things. Yeah, I was already a fan of him from the virtues. So if this is England and the virtues,

1:20.1

but weirdly although it's not my favorite of his pieces, his dark materials was the one that

1:24.5

really made me go, oh man, this guy has something special because it's so different from that.

1:28.8

The bits I had been exposed to had been your skins, this is England, your gritty realism,

1:35.3

and then his dark materials was just amazing. So yeah, as you can tell, I was really excited to

1:40.4

talk to him and we've brought into it. This came about because I hit him up just bundle in praise

1:48.3

on him for help because it blew me away. I thought it was absolutely astounding and a few of the choices

1:55.0

the choice to make them brief spoiler or the choice at the end, the change in where it's all

2:02.1

going towards the end blew me away. I wasn't expecting it at all and I thought it was a beautiful

2:08.0

arc. So yeah, I was obviously excited to talk to Jack and honestly, you'll hear from my excitement

2:15.6

and joy that it's so exciting for me to hear from people like this and hear a bit of their process

2:23.5

and their outlook and their approach and there was so much that fascinated me because again,
