Summary

To put it bluntly, this was quite the conversation. I've found Jack Donovan's work to be both challenging, compelling, and ultimately fascinating—and it's not for the faint of heart. So naturally, I wanted him on the show. Listen in as Jack and I dig into what men of today are facing, modern culture's perspective on masculinity, balancing responsibility and freedom, the role of fathers, and of course, what really are the core tactical and mythic components of "masculinity" as a concept.  Jack Donovan has been writing and speaking about masculinity, masculine philosophy and spirituality for over a decade. His foundational book, The Way of Men, has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Polish. His most recent book, Fire in the Dark, presents a primal system of masculine roles and shows how those roles have been repeated again and again throughout the history of myth and religion. Donovan is an occasional speaker and often appears on podcasts to discuss masculinity and the challenges faced by men who want to live masculine lives in the 21st Century. In 2021, he founded CHEST Magazine with Tanner Guzy to create an alternative to mainstream men’s magazines. CHEST features interviews with courageous and important American men who are speaking up for men and standing against the forces of chaos and darkness that threaten freedom. All right, team, welcome back to the Man Talk Show. I'm Connor Bieden and joining me today is somebody

0:15.7

that I've wanted to have on the show for quite a while, Jack Donovan. He is a fascinating character, lives a fascinating

0:23.9

life. He's an incredible writer, done a lot of writing on men, masculinity. His work has really

0:32.0

resonated with a lot of men. And for some people, he's a little controversial. We don't necessarily

0:37.4

talk about why or dig into

0:39.8

any of the trenches on that because I wanted to keep the conversation about his work and about

0:46.8

myth and men. So he has been writing and speaking about masculinity, masculine philosophy and spirituality for over a decade. His foundational book, The Way of Men, has been writing and speaking about masculinity, masculine philosophy, and spirituality for over a

0:55.5

decade. His foundational book, The Way of Men, has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and has

1:01.3

been translated into French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Polish. His most recent book,

1:06.6

Fire in the Dark, which we talk about a little bit, which I've read. I've actually read most of his

1:11.5

books, I think all of his books, actually, because I've been interested in the perspective that

1:17.8

he comes at men and masculinity from because it resonates with a lot of guys. So fire in the dark

1:23.3

presents a primal system of masculine roles and shows how those roles have been repeated again and

1:29.9

again throughout history of myth and religion. Jack is an occasional speaker and often appears on

1:36.0

podcast to discuss masculinity and the challenges faced by men who want to live masculine lives

1:42.0

in the 21st century. So today in this episode, we talk about a few

1:47.5

things. I just ask Jack about a few of his concepts from different books. So we talk about

1:53.9

defining masculinity from a mythological perspective. We talk about some of the challenges that men face and the arc that the masculine

2:04.7

archetype will face within myth.

2:08.1

And we talk a little bit about the role of the father towards the end of the show,

2:13.8

the role of the father, again, from a mythological standpoint and what it can teach us. And a lot of

2:19.8

conversation about challenges that men are facing now and what can myth teach us about how to
