Summary

What hinders people from going on to maturity in their faith? That was the question concerning the church in Corinth. Paul writes his first epistle to them in response to questions they had had, and to correct them about what they were doing wrong. They were guilty of idolizing their leaders and of allowing a worldly “wisdom” to creep into the church. In today’s message, Pastor Gary addresses these things and warns us not to repeat their mistakes in a message entitled, “It’s Time to Grow Up!”

0:13.1

First Corinthians and then hang a left, go back to Romans. And then before that, the book of Acts,

written by Paul, of course, inspired by the Holy Spirit. He wrote this book around the year 56 AD.

0:51.9

It was a letter to the church that he planted about five years before he

0:58.3

wrote this letter. So a little bit about Corinth, the city itself, because it kind of helps us to

1:03.5

understand the dynamics of the people that made up this first church. Corinth was an important

1:10.0

port city of Greece, and it was the Roman

1:13.4

capital for that particular region. Remember, this is first century, this is Roman Empire.

1:18.5

There were around 700,000 people who lived in Corinth during the time of the first century AD,

1:24.2

when Paul visited there. But please note, most of that population was slaves.

1:29.9

About 500,000 made up slaves. It was more than twice the population of the, of the freed population.

1:36.3

Roman citizens made up about 200,000. And of course, slavery was part of the downfall of the Roman Empire.

1:48.5

And so we see Corinth as a major metropolis with the slave population twice as much as the Roman citizen population. It was an

1:54.9

extremely immoral city. There were 12 temples that dotted the landscape of Corinth. The most

2:00.6

important one to them was the Temple of Aphrodite.
