There's a lot of reasons the Hollywood writers are on strike, but if you pan back, back, back,

and take a big picture

view of what's going on, the writers' issues stem in many ways from the consolidation of power

and entertainment. A few companies in streaming and the vertical integration of those companies,

meaning they control production and distribution of content, and all the changes that that power

has enabled. It might surprise some younger listeners, but there was a time not that long ago

where the outlets that aired TV shows weren't allowed to own those shows.

It was called the Financial Interest in Syndication Rules, or FinCin, which were enacted in 1970,

and they enabled some of the greatest wealth creation in the history of Hollywood.
