Hello and welcome to another episode of I Away with Jemela Jamel podcast that if it could it would shove a grenade right up the asshole for concept of shame.

0:11.4

How are you?

0:13.0

I'm alright, I've had a little bit of a break from the news I just needed to it's getting too much is getting too sad and pressing and I do feel better for it and maybe that selfish or maybe you want me to be speaking about everything got topic in the world.

0:27.2

But I'm afraid sometimes it's just going to have to be tough shit and I mean that was all of the love in my heart because for me to be sustainable in what is a very long fight.

0:37.9

I have to take little breaks and so do you.

0:40.9

So maybe you could look at this as your signal and your mind is to take a fucking break and switch off and to not feel that you have to see everything and read everything and hear everything and think everything and talk about everything all the time.

0:56.0

You can just have a little rest.

0:59.2

Slowly but surely over the years I've started to do that more and more as I've realized that there's a real implication upon our brains neurologically when we read such stressful and distressing and scary shit all the time.

1:11.8

The reason why I chose today's guest for this week is because I think that she is such a loving and warm speaker I think this episode just feels like a sort of supportive best friend.

1:26.3

A cuddle and a fuzzy warm embrace of a chat.

1:32.8

I really like Alex light and I like the presence that she has on Instagram.

1:38.2

I like how unpretentious she is. I like how blunt she is. I love how open she is about her own story through her own struggles with her body with eating disorders with dieting.

1:48.2

She's such an open book and she really, really, really utilizes her own experience in order to try her best to help others to stop them similarly to me to stop them from going through everything that she has needlessly had to endure.

2:04.6

Because of the disgusting diet industry and patriarchal media.

2:10.6

In this episode we talk about her eating disorder journey and we talk about how normal it is for recovery to be slow.

2:16.6

We talk about specifically how ineffective dieting is for weight loss and where the myth of dieting even comes from.

2:24.6

We talk about all the physical ramifications of dieting both of which she and I have experienced over the years.

2:31.5

Even 10 years after recovery and we talk about weight gain and why it's okay and how even if it feels scary sometimes it can bring about the best period of your life as we have both found as two people who are much heavier than we were when we were at the lowest point of our eating disorders.

2:50.5

She has a new book out. It's called you are not a before picture which is such a lovely title is out now in the UK and it will be out in the US in August and

2:58.4

it's a book and this is an episode as well that you can enjoy yourself but also might be really handy to send to someone who hasn't had these conversations and these thoughts before.

3:09.4

It's a wonderful passionate and kind introduction to no longer being gassed by the media that it is normal for us to hate ourselves just over the way that we look.

3:22.3
