Summary

It’s ok to feel scared right now. To be angry and frustrated and not know what to do. It’s fine to have those feelings, but as Michigan Secretary of State, and leading candidate for Governor, Jocelyn Benson asks, what do we do next? How do we stand up for what’s right when the stakes are high? How do we change the world not let the world change us? We talk today about finding purpose in rage, in the importance of building the bravery muscle, and to move forward even when we’re scared. History shows us when Americans fight, when we organize, when we don’t back down, we win. We can’t forget that now. Now, we move forward. Our democracy is not a given. It does require us every generation, as John Lewis said, to stand

0:05.5

up and fight for it. And we have to be willing to do that if we have any chance at all of ensuring

0:10.6

that it survives and thrives in moments like this and beyond. Hello and welcome to the Politics Girl podcast. I'm your host Lee McGowan. Let's get into it.

So last week, Donald Trump had a rally for his 100th day in office in Michigan.

0:33.3

And as someone so rightly said, he loved it because he likes running for president more than he

0:37.8

likes being president.

0:39.0

But he didn't choose Michigan arbitrarily.

0:41.3

He chose it because it's a true swing state, with him winning in 2024 and losing to Biden in 2020.

0:47.1

And a shining example of what a state can actually look like when democracy works.

0:51.6

And he would prefer it wasn't that way.

So with Governor Gretchen Whitmer,

0:54.8

unable to run for re-election in 26 because of term limits, I believe we're going to see Trump

0:59.0

and Michigan more to start priming that audience to have a Republican take her seat. So today,

1:04.1

we're going to talk to Jocelyn Benson, Michigan's Secretary of State, responsible for the

1:07.9

safety and security of their elections, and the leading candidate

1:11.0

for governor of Michigan, as well as the author of the new book, Purposeful Warrior, standing up for

1:16.7

what's right when the stakes are high. A book that Hillary Clinton called inspiring, and John

1:21.7

Stamos called a master class in badassery. I wanted to have Jocelyn on to talk about where she

1:26.8

thinks we sit at this

1:27.7

moment in American history and how we fight back when it seems like everything just keeps getting

1:32.3

worse. She's doing it every day and we can join her. So without further ado, please welcome my guest,

Michigan Secretary of State, candidate for governor, and author of the purposeful warrior,
