Summary

In the opening episode for TransLash Media’s riveting new mini-series, our trusted award-winning journalist Imara Jones introduces us to a key component of the anti-trans hate machine through a historic case: Hecox v. Little. She walks us through the introduction to HB 500, the law that made Idaho the first state to ban transgender athletes participating in sports, and the investigation that quickly followed suit. We hear from aspiring college athlete Lindsay Hecox, as well as Ritchie Eppink, the Legal Director of the ACLU of Idaho, and Chase Strangio, Deputy Director for Transgender Justice, who aided her through her case. And Imara receives an unexpected surprise when Idaho Representative Barbara Ehardt, the sponsor of the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act (HB 500), takes her call. In the end we learn about the organization behind these bills, a far-right group called Alliance Defending Freedom.

Hey, TransLash family. It's me, Amara Jones. Welcome to the TransSash podcast, a show about trans news and culture, where we tell trans stories to save trans lives.

0:21.1

Today I'm sharing with you a special project put together by the trans-Media team.

0:26.0

For over a year, we have been looking into the money, the organizations, the people, the politicians,

0:32.3

and the religious ideology behind the anti-trans backlash all across the states that's happening right now.

0:39.9

And we've put together everything that we've learned into this very special podcast that will

0:44.7

unfold beginning today that's called the anti-trans hate machine, a plot against equality.

0:50.9

Now it's going to be a departure from what we normally do, which emphasizes the

0:54.8

positivity in our community and the joy. But we feel that we have to look at what's happening,

1:01.0

even if it's uncomfortable and painful, in order to stop it. And the surprise here is that the

1:07.4

hope is us. The hope are the young trans people across the country that you'll meet,

1:12.7

as well as the adults that support them who are standing up and fighting back.

1:16.7

So we hope that you'll learn from everything that you'll hear

1:19.6

and you'll be inspired by people like us who are saving ourselves.

1:36.4

I was preparing for an interview one morning in February 2020.

1:42.7

That interview was for a documentary that me and my team at Translash were producing called The Future of Trans.

1:47.0

It's a fundamentally hopeful piece about what's ahead for trans people, what we can actually look forward to. As I was waiting for all of that to start,

1:54.0

I do what I normally do. I was watching and scrolling through the news. Yeah, I do that. Try not to judge me because it's my job.

2:04.3

And that's when I caught a glimpse, a glimpse of a potentially darker future in store for

2:10.5

trans people. And that came in the form of a bill. And it was an anti-trans bill in Idaho.

2:16.8

A lawmaker now introducing a bill that would ban transgender girls from playing on girls high school and college sports teams.

2:25.2

It was the second piece of hateful legislation that year, and I thought to myself, this has to be coming from somewhere.

2:32.0

I want to find out where and what's going on.
