Straight White American Jesus I am your host Dan Miller professor of religion and

social thought at Landmark College a quick shout out to somebody who reached out with an email

and happened to be driving up the interstate in Vermont

and was like, oh my gosh, that's where Landmark College is

and drop me a line.

Cool to have, I guess, kind of a visitor up in my neck of the

wood so anyway diving into today I want to hit a topic it's it's funny all of you are great and

you send me these these topics and these ideas and sometimes you're like,

I can't believe you haven't talked about this or maybe you talked about this and I missed it,

which is usually the nice way of saying like I've been through your whole list and you haven't talked about this.

And this was one of those topics where I was like, oh, how have I not ever thought about that?

But a few people had reached out with really what feels like one of the, it's like a

goldy oldy of kind of conservative religious language in America, American

Evangelicalism, what have you.

And it's also an idea that I think has a lot of different kind of valences and nuances to it.

I think that's why folks reach out with these ideas is because they can have like different senses and

different meanings and as we're always interested in different uses.

And this one is the specific phrase salt and light.

When somebody says, you know, that they're called to be salt and light or

that somebody says Christians are salt and light and and people reached out and

were like what is this and they were talking about some of the contexts in which they hear it and I was like yeah salt and light like I haven't thought about that one but that's definitely one of those phrases that goes goes way back and I think it's also one of those phrases
