Summary

This week on Nerdette, we feature two of our favorite interviews from 2022, both with people who work to find hope and joy in tandem with difficulty and grief. First up is Dylan Marron, whose book ‘Conversations with People Who Hate Me’ is based on what he learned from his podcast with the same name. Then, poet Ross Gay reflects on an often overlooked emotion in his newest book, ‘Inciting Joy.’

I'm Natalie Moore. I fell in love with soap operas when I was just five years old, and I still

From WB.EZ Chicago, this is Nerdette. I'm Greta Johnson. We did it. We made it to another weekend. This week on the show, we are going to reflect on solidarity, empathy, and joy by listening back to two of our favorite conversations from last year. Both Roskeye and Dylan Marin are finding hope through difficult times,

and their books are about that too, though. They take very different approaches. First,

we're going to listen back to Dylan. Now, Dylan has been called a lot of names on the internet.

I'm not going to get into too many of them here, but anonymous people have told him that he is a moron, among other things. But instead of shying away from the trolls online,

Dylan has decided to lean in. He is engaging. He is literally calling these people up on the phone,

1:20.9

and that is what became his podcast conversations with people who hate me. That's also the title

1:26.5

of his book, where he reflects on what he

learned. It came out last year. Here's Dylan. Thank you so much for having me. This is an honor.

So obviously, as a person who interviews people, I am like a huge conversation nerd. And I'm just so

1:39.7

fascinated by the work that you're doing and especially the care and compassion that you're showing

1:45.1

for people who are, you know, are being called out for bad behavior. I can't imagine how much

1:50.8

work that takes from you. And just to give people an example, if they haven't heard the podcast yet,

1:55.3

I think we should listen to a clip. This is from a recent episode. I think it really exemplifies

2:00.2

the work that you're doing.

2:01.2

This is where you're talking to a high school student who participated in a misogynistic meme about an actress.

And just a note to listeners, the guest voice is altered because he's underaged.
