Summary

Three big stories are on the agenda this morning: the war in Iran has dominated over the weekend, with Trump now failing to conceal his feelings towards Keir Starmer; Ed Miliband is also rising in profile, with those close to the cabinet briefing against him and his influence; and, finally, the Liaison Committee will sit later today, giving select committee chairs the opportunity to grill the Prime Minister. Will Keir Starmer manage to escape this week into a quiet recess?

Tim Shipman and James Heale discuss.

Produced by Megan McElroy.

Hello, welcome to Coffee House. I'm James Heel.

0:07.0

And I'm Tim Shill. Today we'll be discussing through the big stories and news. First up, Iran.

0:12.0

What is Donald Trump now saying about the Strait of Hormuz?

0:14.0

And then we're going to talk about the government having crisis meetings on energy prices.

0:18.0

And finally, we'll talk about Labour pains. What are Kyristarmes' own MP saying

0:21.9

ahead of the Prime Minister's Liaison Committee meeting later today? First of those, of course,

0:25.7

is the war in Iran. We have had days and days of war war. Well, now, James, Donald Trump.

0:32.7

We've got a bit of jaw-jaw, jaw. Which has arrived. Of course, in the form of a truth social post, he is pleased to report

0:40.4

that the United States and the country of Iran, not the Islamic Republic, have had over the last

0:45.8

two days very good and very productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution

0:50.4

of our hostilities in the Middle East based on the tenor and tone of these in-depth

0:54.4

detailed and constructive conversations. Do you sense at this point that somebody might have

0:58.2

written parts of this for Chump himself? Which, which, spelt like a witch, we'll continue

1:04.8

throughout the week. I've instructed the Department of War to postpone all and any military

1:08.8

strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure

1:11.6

for a five-day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions.

1:16.7

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Now, the interesting thing here is that it appears

1:21.8

to be a cessation of violence against power plants, which had not yet begun, because the threat from Trump was we had a

1:29.3

deadline that was about to expire at midnight this evening, whereby he would threaten to blast

1:35.5

the Iranian power plants if they didn't reopen the Straits of Hormuz. What he's saying is,

1:40.6

we won't be doing that now for five days. What he's unclear from this is whether he's stopping all bombing for five days. It certainly doesn't suggest from that that's what's going to happen. And you would imagine, wouldn't you, that if the Israelis thought they had just five days left for bombing, that they might up their game a bit over the next five days. Well, might step it up, actually, yeah, because I think that, look, everyone's thinking

2:01.2

this can't be a long-lasting thing.
