We're going to have a tricky one today. I think it's probably important. I hope it isn't, actually,

but I think it probably is. I would urge you to read Hugo Rifkind in the Times today, who draws

attention to something that has been troubling me for a couple of weeks. I've

alluded to it. I don't know if I've articulated it quite as explicitly as Hugo Rifkin does

this morning. But where we see tragedy, some people I fear have seen opportunity. Some of the

sort of more toxic exemplars of hard right ideology,

whether in the Commentariat or in the cabinet,

seem to have seen an opportunity to entrench division

to turn us even more against each other than previously.

And I'm not sure there has been a better example than that

than Suella Braverman describing almost entirely peaceful protests against the continuing bombardment

of Gaza as hate marches. Now, I absolutely recognize the unacceptability of some of the signs that

were carried, some of the slogans that were chanted, and some of the characterizations.

Most disgustingly, I think, from where I've been sitting the two women with pictures of

hang gliders on their back,

who have now, of course, been arrested.

So the number of arrests and the fruits of the daily male desperately searching for evidence of malfeasance,

I'm afraid, prove that the description as almost entirely peaceful protests against the continuing killing of civilians in Gaza is simply accurate.

It's not an opinion, it's counting. It doesn't dilute in any way the disgustingness of some of the things that a tiny minority of people have said or have

written down on slogans. But in terms of peace, as the opposite of violence, they have been

in almost entirely peaceful protest. Considerably more peaceful, for example, than protests
