Summary

Music is one of those things that can bring families together…and sometimes, that togetherness grows into a business… The BeeGees had the three Gibb brothers…baby brother Andy Gibb was also part of that universe for a while… Then there’s The Beach Boys…the original lineup included Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson and their cousin Mike Love…Murray Wilson—the father of Brian, Dennis, and Carl—was their manager…he was terrible at it (in fact, Murray was an all-around disaster for his sons), but at least they were all together…or something like that…three brothers, their father and a cousin… We have The Cowsills…this was a 60s pop group from Rhode island who had a series of hits…six siblings: Bob, Bill, Barry, John, Paul and Susan…they ranged from 8 to 18…and then there was mother Barbra…this arrangement was the inspiration for the TV show “the partridge family”…that’s seven people, which later became eight when Bob’s twin brother Richard joined up for a bit… And we have to talk about the Jackson 5: Michael, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon…when the group left Motown, Jermaine was replaced by Randy… So that’s six members of the Jackson 5… then we have Janet, LaToya and Rebbie…that’s nine, and everything was run by father Joe Jackson—another abusive disaster…so the count is up to 10… All this got me thinking: are there equivalents in the world of alt-rock?...What are the biggest family affairs the genre has ever seen?...Let’s take a look… Learn more about your ad choices. Music is one of those things that can bring families together, and sometimes that togetherness

0:14.7

grows into a business. The Bee Gees had the three Gibb brothers. Baby Brother Andy Gibb was also

0:20.2

part of that universe for a while.

0:22.4

Then there's the Beach Boys. The original lineup included Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, and their

0:27.3

cousin Mike Love. Murray Wilson, the father of Brian, Dennis, and Carl, was their manager. He was

0:33.8

terrible at it. In fact, Murray was the worst thing ever for his sons, but at least they were all together.

0:39.6

Or something like that. Three brothers, their father, and a cousin.

0:43.2

Then we have the cowsills. This was a 60s pop group from Rhode Island who had a series of hits.

0:48.8

Six siblings in this one, Bob, Bill, Barry, John, Paul, and Susan. They ranged from 8 to 18, and they were joined by their

0:57.9

mother Barbara. And before you ask, yes, this arrangement was the inspiration for the TV show The Partridge

1:03.5

family. So that's seven people, which actually later became eight when Bob's twin brother

1:08.4

Richard joined up for a bit. Then we have to talk about the

1:11.7

Jackson 5, Michael, Jackie, Tito, Germain, and Marlin. When the group left Motown, Germain stayed

1:17.8

behind and was replaced by Randy. So that's six members of the Jackson 5. And then we have

1:23.2

Janet, Latoya, and Rebbe. So that's nine. And then everything was run by Father Joe Jackson, who is another abusive disaster.

1:31.4

So the count there is 10.

1:33.6

So all this got me thinking, are there equivalents in the world of Alt Rock?

1:37.9

One of the biggest family affairs that genre has ever seen.

1:42.4

Let's take a look.

1:49.2
