About The Show

The Distraction is Defector's flagship podcast about sports (and movies, and art, and sandwiches, and certain coastal states) from longtime writers Drew Magary and David Roth. Every week, Drew and Roth tackle subjects, both serious and impossibly stupid, with a parade of guests from around the world of sports and media joining in the fun! Roth and Drew also field Funbag questions from Defector readers, answer listener voicemails, and get upset about the number of people who use speakerphone while in a public bathroom stall. This is a show where everything matters, because everyone could use a Distraction. Head to defector.com for more info.

All right, here we go.

Let's go. Is that how you say it? I never was ever, I never was ever really up on that. Let's go. Let's go. We're back. We're back. It's a distraction. I'm Drew. That's raw. Are you doing rough? I'm good, man. Happy indeterminate period between the holidays. Well, this will be posting on New Year's Day, 2026. So happy, happy new year to you, Roth. It certainly can't be any worse than the last one, or could it? Just kidding. I thought 2025 was pretty sick. I liked a lot of the shit that happened in 2020. You know what I wanted to do? I wanted to take, we, you know, it's a short episode. It's just, just raw the night. But I didn't want to talk about our years. And we can talk about, we can talk about personally and we can talk about it newswise, too. You know, because one tends to affect the other whether you like it or not. So I'm just going to ask you, you know, how was your year? I mean, I think it on balance got better over the course of turning into 2026.

1:07.0

I like, you know, I myself, I think was pretty okay during 2025.

1:09.4

I just, I started at a very low ab.

1:14.6

I mean, I think, and this is, you know, some of it is politics and some of it is just a, you know, the matter of getting older and the things that sort of happen around you as you get older.

1:19.6

I did not start it in a great place.

1:22.6

And, you know, I'm ending it feeling better, you know, like pretty wrung out the way that I generally

1:29.4

do around this time of year. But like, happy to have made it and with some hope for, you know,

1:35.9

better things to come. And I don't know. I mean, I just think in general that is the most that I'm

1:42.6

looking to ask for from one of this.

1:44.8

Unless I, like, get my shit together and completely change my life.

1:48.3

And I'm like, this is the year I gained 30 pounds of muscle.

1:50.6

Or this is the year I lost 15 pounds of weight from under my chin.

1:55.2

Or I wrote a book.

1:56.2

Or, like, I directed my debut feature.

1:59.1

I kind of do.

1:59.8

Look at this angle.

2:00.8

Yeah, I mean, yeah. We all make the jowl face in the mirror. It's just too extra disgust ourselves. Yeah. That's where it goes when you are our age and still drink. You get a lot of, you get a lot of throat and chin area. Would I be prying if I asked you, you said you started out the year in a really rough place

2:19.5

personally.

2:20.0

Can I ask for specifics on that or would you rather not?

2:22.4

Yeah, yeah.

2:22.9

I mean, it was like a lot.
