senseless mass shooting here at Rob Elementary School in Newvalde, Texas. 19 students and

two teachers lost their lives that awful day and the world changed forever. ABC News has

been on the ground here in Newvalde for the past year. What follows? The very personal

stories of the courageous families and survivors, all of whom open their homes and their hearts,

so that we will never forget.

I am many things. A mother, a journalist, a student, a runner.

Now I carry another title. When I wish I could give back, I am the mother of a mass shooting victim.

I'm Kimberly Rubio. I'm Lexi's mom. Running my three mile outdoor route is the only time I

allow myself to ruminate on the events that unfolded on May 24th, 2022. The day and 18-year-old

armed with an assault-style weapon murdered my youngest daughter, Alexandria, Lexi, Rubio,

and ten of her classmates, along with two teachers and eight students in an adjacent classroom.

I guess running away, it's probably not a good thing, but that's what it feels like just getting away.

It's the only time I really let myself think about what happened that day. I don't want to

process that when I'm here at home, but when I'm running about myself. I left my daughter at school

and she never came home. There was somewhere I could go to escape this pain. I had already booked my flight.
