Israelis are living in reality. It's not an especially happy reality right now, but at least it's real.

I mean, every society has stories they tell themselves, but in Israel I detected much more of a shared existence than I see here.

There is no widespread conspiracy theorizing about how October 7th was an inside job,

how October 7th was a false flag.

People have questions.

There aren't great answers right now,

but there's no cottage industry equivalent to QAnon

or just the pure reality denialism in the public realm that you often see in the United States.

In a word, I would say that Israel lacks the decadence of the United States. Decidence isn't a choice, it's a condition, and the

comor abidities are abundance, safety, and lack of material friction or hardship.

When war is a regular part of your life,

Decidence isn't really an option you can reach for. But I met young soldiers,
