In a televised press conference, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, announced that

the Israel defense forces had entered a second phase of the war in Gaza.

He warned of a, quote, long and difficult operation in the coastal enclave to, quote,

dismantle Hamas and free hostages.

Earlier, Yoav Gallant, the defense minister, said, quote, the earth in Gaza shook on Friday

night when the IDF entered the enclave and attacked Hamas, striking, quote, above ground

and underground.

Since then, internet and phone service in the strip have been down.

Thousands of thousands of protesters gathered in cities across the world to call for a ceasefire

in Gaza.

More than 50,000 demonstrated in London.

Thousands marched in New Zealand, addressing a pro-Palestinian rally in Istanbul, Recep Tayyip

Erdogan, Turkey's president, characterized Israel's strikes as, quote, a massacre, criticized

Western leaders, and urged the Muslim world to unite.
