Summary

Israel’s parliament has passed a law imposing the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of fatal attacks - a measure sharply criticised as discriminatory by European countries and human rights groups. After the law passed, the Knesset erupted into cheers and the national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, brandished a bottle of champagne in celebration. The law has been decried as ‘an act of institutionalised discrimination and racist violence against Palestinians’ by Israel’s leading rights group. Lucy Hough speaks to the Guardian’s deputy head of international news, Devika Bhat watch on YouTube. Help support our independent journalism at theguardian.com/infocus

The kind of key concern with this law, really,

0:14.3

is that it is sort of discriminatory,

0:16.0

because it effectively applies only to Palestinians,

even though in theory it doesn't.

In practice, that's what will happen.

under consideration that's had several readings for some time that authorises the death penalty

1:20.2

executions against Palestinians who are accused of committing deadly attacks against Israelis.

1:27.2

We'll come on to what this means for

1:31.0

Palestinians, but first of all, just talk to me about the way this legislation was introduced

1:36.7

and what it means in practice. Thanks, Lucy, yeah. So this was legislation that passed

1:42.7

the Knesset yesterday. So it was in its sort of final reading that passed 62 votes to, I think, 48 in favour. And one of those who voted in favour was the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And what it does is it, as you say, sort of effectively makes the death penalty the kind of

2:04.2

default punishment for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank who are convicted of terrorism,

2:11.2

of sort of deadly terror attacks. Yeah, I mean, it's a bit of a kind of, you know,
