Good morning. It's three minutes after ten, and you are listening to James O'Brien on LBC, where we will in a second dive headlong into what is, I think,

during my years in this job, the most fractious and the most difficult of conversations.

And I heard Nick attempting to negotiate this simple point yesterday, very adroitly,

it's almost impossible to say anything about violence

in Israel and Gaza without upsetting somebody. And I'm sorry in advance if you do get upset. Some

criticism we receive is fair, some we feel is unfair, some is hard to comprehend. Some is easy to comprehend. And I'm

afraid that that very hackneyed phrase, never the twain shall meet, feels particularly pertinent in

this context. So we will try and have a conversation. We will have a conversation. We will

try to respect the sensibilities of both history and both sides, but we will not be able to do so without, I'm afraid, upsetting some people.

And I don't think it's appropriate on a subject such as this one with the death toll rising since yesterday's program even to sort of offer up the defense of trying to upset equally. I mean,

in an ideal world, we wouldn't upset anyone, but in an ideal world, people wouldn't be dying

at a rate or on a scale that we haven't seen for many years. Also, always important, I think,

to give credit where it's true. Listening to the Today program on Radio 4 this morning, they did an astonishing story upon the hand grenade, really, that social media has thrown into adoptive families, something that I know a little bit about.

Regular listeners will know that I'm adopted, but I was weeks old when I was adopted.

So my generation of adoptees

don't really understand this new world. Children adopted from troubled backgrounds or from care

or both having contact almost impossible to police contact with birth families determined to restore contact.

And listening to the radio this morning, it was clear that they were taken aback, having shared one story of this scenario,

they were taken aback by the number of people that got in touch.

So we'll definitely be opening up that later in the program.

And we may well, as things stand, return to this very curious question of so-called voter ID.
