Summary

The crisis in the Middle East, like so many issues that truly matter, is complicated and nuanced and simply won’t fit on a bumper sticker. It’s essential that we look at the whole picture and move beyond who needs to be punished (and many do) to set a goal of creating a place of peace and stability. This is also not an isolated issue. Governments around the world are shifting to the far right and supporting each other as they do it. So, whether it’s Putin, Netanyahu, Hamas or Trump, they’re all looking out for number one, and we need to be supporting alternatives who want everyone to succeed, not simply the select few. At the end of the day we need to hold two ideas in our heads at once. Palestinian people deserve a state of their own, without Israeli occupation, and Israel deserves to exist in safety and security in the midst of a hostile region. It’s an incredibly difficult needle to thread, but a peaceful coexistence is what anyone who believes in the rights of humanity should want. 0:00.0	on October 7th, 2023, Hamas militants, along with the Palestinian Islamic jihad, invading the country
0:08.5	and attacking and killing more than 1400 Israelis, taking more than 240 civilian hostages, including children and babies.
0:15.2	There was mass rape and torture, and it's now considered the greatest tragedy in Israel's history
0:19.6	as well as the most heinous crime that's ever been committed by a terrorist group.
0:24.0	Now, Israel responded with widespread bombing of the Gaza Strip and a full ground invasion which
0:29.7	killed and injured tens of thousands of Palestinians in the area. Israel was blatantly attacked. They clearly have a right to exist and a right to fight back.
0:39.0	But they're dealing with a terrorist group that knows that dead civilians and destroyed cities and mass
0:46.0	carnage only make Israel look bad and these are people that are willing to
0:51.2	use their own citizens as human shields who are willing to hide amongst those who have been taught for generation that Israel is the enemy and dying.
0:58.0	Fighting Israel is a good cause that will take you to heaven.
1:01.0	So the problem to me, it seemed obvious at first was it's Hamas, right? They don't
1:07.3	care what's best for their people. They make deals with their own people in Reneg. We hear
1:12.1	about a ceasefire all the time but there was a
1:14.0	ceasefire with Israel in October 6th that Hamas broke. What is Israel supposed to do?
1:19.4	That's kind of where my brain was at first. Does that seem reasonable? Well of course it does and I think
1:28.0	you know every Israeli that I know refers to October 7th is the worst day in the country's history. It was a trauma. The videos
1:36.7	that exist of it are horrifying. The acts committed by the Hamas terrorists are despicable.
1:45.0	And so the first reaction is, you know,
1:48.1	we've got to seek vengeance against Hamas for what they did, right?
