The Maher has often been translated as dowry. I personally reject that translation because in European countries in the West, the dowry was a bride price.

What it is is a financial gift.

It is a giving at the occasion of the contract of marriage.

And that amount is not limited on the high end, nor is it limited

on the low end, but it must occur.

So when we know that it must occur, I believe it should give us pause, and we should say

to ourselves, okay, this is something really important.

This is something that is a critical part

of the beginning of a marriage.

Islamically, I would say that there is financial stability

for women.

The maher starts that process out

by giving a woman financial security.

Oftentimes, we can be so quick in discussing the details of the wedding hall and guest list.

Yet we rarely reserve the time for serious discussions such as financial compatibility,
