0:42.2	Somewhere around 720 BC, the prophet Isaiah began to see visions about what must have seemed like
0:49.2	an impossible future. Jerusalem would be destroyed. God's people would be sent into exile in Babylon.
0:57.0	And I say that it must have sounded impossible to the people living around him because Assyria was
1:02.5	the ascendant superpower in the ancient Near East. Babylon, it was once a great power,
1:08.1	but now that Isaiah was prophesying, it was just a small power. It represented
1:13.5	a lost past. The Israelites might have thought about Babylon the way that we think about Rome today,
1:19.7	as a place from long ago, but not something with a bright future in front of it. And yet,
1:25.4	Isaiah foresaw the rise of the Neo-Babolonian Empire and even more
1:29.2	impossibly the destruction of God's city, Jerusalem. But perhaps his most inexplicable prediction
1:35.1	comes in Isaiah 44. I want to read this short passage in its entirety because in context,
1:41.7	it's clear that Isaiah wants to show that God is not just a creator.
1:45.6	He's going to hit that point.
1:46.9	He's also a creator who is in control of time and history.
1:51.1	He is the one who is sovereign over reality itself, and he proves it by knowing what will
1:55.7	happen and then making what he knows to happen happen in the future.
