When Chris and I were first married, she introduced me to the idea of empty calories, foods that you could eat, but that would give you little to no nutrition.

By the way, this was how she described many of the things I had grown used to eating in college.

This week, we study Isaiah 13 through 35, and look at the things Isaiah describes that are the spiritual version of empty calories and conversely and much

more importantly, the things that truly feed the soul.

We are week two of our study of Isaiah. This week is chapters 13 through 35 selections therefrom.

And I want to start with a story I came across a couple of years ago as I was kind of making my way through some

classic general conferences.

So this is October of 1971.

It's Elder Theodore Tuttle of the 70.

He was the presidency of the 70 this time.

And he tells this story. So I'm quoting him. He says,

Some years ago, I read an editorial in the Deseret News entitled The Mechanical Rabbit. And I quote,

Most of our readers must have smiled the other day when they read of the greyhounds in Britain

who didn't know a rabbit when they see one. So long had they chased a mechanical rabbit around the racetrack, that when a real rabbit

bounded across the track, the dogs didn't give it a second look.

Stupid, right? But sad, too, this perverting of the natural instincts.
