Isabelle Sandoval wrote, directed, and stars in the new Netflix film Linguafranca,

an intimate portrait of an undocumented trans-Philippina living in New York.

The film could have turned out quite differently if Sandoval,

making her first film following her own transition, hadn't stood her ground with an investor who wanted cliched scenes of physical violence.

Yeah, that potential investor whose credentials actually turned out to be quite questionable anyway, wanted to take it in that direction.

I was like, no.

I want to tell this story my way.

Doing it her way, Sondival actually asked for a smaller budget,

so she could be in charge of her movie.

She talks about the twists and turns that landed Linguafranca on Netflix,

from initial production troubles to a successful festival run,

to a deal with Ava DuVernay's distribution company.
