Summary

Thomasin McKenzie is this week’s guest—star of Edgar Wright’s ‘Last Night in Soho’, Mark’s film of the year 2018 ‘Leave No Trace’—and now ‘Joy’, a new Netflix drama about the development of IVF treatment at Oldham hospital in the 1970s. Written by Jack Thorne, the film’s medical miracle story is focalised through McKenzie’s character Jean Purdy—a talented embryologist whose work was key to the team’s breakthrough discovery, but whose name was left out of the history books. She chats to Simon about putting Jean back in the picture in this latest in a line of meaty and challenging roles for the young actor. Reviews this week of ‘Blink’, a poignant documentary following a family determined to travel the world and create precious visual memories for their three children, who are losing their sight—and Amrou Al-Kadhi's debut drag queen drama ‘Layla’, which follows the story of the titular performer (Bilal Hasna) as they discover their confidence and creativity whilst navigating their queer Arab identity. Plus the much-anticipated stage-to-screen musical ‘Wicked’. The Wizard of Oz prequel stars Cynthia Erivo as green-skinned misfit Elphaba, and Ariana Grande as glam girl Galinda, both still witches-to-be as they forge an unlikely and rocky friendship at university. We find out if Mark thinks it’s going to be ‘Pop-u-lar'... Plus top quality correspondence from you and typical witterings from the Good Doctors as per. Hello, this is Elizabeth Day from the How to Fail podcast. I want to tell you about Bista Village. It's the ultimate day out and my absolute favourite place to shop because it genuinely feels like a village, full of my favourite brands and providing such amazing savings. It's in a stunning location in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, but it only takes an hour on the train from London, although I actually use the free all-day parking.

When I arrived, I made a beeline for my favourite boutiques like Jill Sander. I picked up two amazing silk shirts, which will last me for years, one at 40% off and one at a half price, and I bought the most flattering jeans at

Anina Bing. Everyone is so helpful and nice, and even better, you can stop off for a Bellini

at Chiconies to refuel. Perfect. Have a wonderful day out with Bista Village, where shopping is

happening. Watch my full experience on the How to Fail YouTube channel and find out how you can win a

I want to see some naked dudes.

That's why I built this pool.

1:18.7

Is that it? We apologize for that scary start to this week's podcast as Mark is Blink 182 for reasons that will become clear.

1:32.3

I don't miss not hearing Blink 182, I have to say.

1:36.3

Well, I only used to hear them in the car when they were played by other members of the family.

1:40.3

But that is, I think that's the shortest, it's one of the shortest songs I've ever heard.

1:46.0

It is like 15 seconds long.

1:48.2

But no, okay, well that's good, but not as good as I think I might have mentioned before,

mega-armageddon death by the electro-hippies, which is on a John Peel session lasted one second

and is a single guitar chord.

2:04.9

And I, well, I was doing the evening session going up to John Peel. And because Radio One had broadcast a Genesis concert, the evening show had been

2:12.3

reduced instead of two hours to like 40 minutes. But Phil Ross, who was the producer,

2:17.3

decided that we were going to play exactly the same

2:19.1

number of tracks.

2:19.9

But to do that, every song had to be two minutes or under.
