Summary

Jon Mackenzie is joined by performance manager Callum Walsh to talk about the problems associated with player fitness. What does an average week look like for a fitness and conditioning professional in a football club? How much of an influence does the team’s game model have on the strength and conditioning process? How many games is too many games, and what is a reasonable recovery time between matches? How should we think about clubs that seem to consistently suffer from more injuries than others? Hello and welcome to the TFO Football Podcast. I am John McKenzie and I'm joined as I always

0:12.0

am by my good pal and producer Mike Zimmerman. Mike how are you doing? Doing good John, how are you?

0:16.7

Yeah I'm doing really well and I'm doing really well because we've just had a conversation with

0:20.5

a really fascinating guy, a fitness conditioning expert, a guy called Callum Walsh. He's told us

0:25.8

a lot about what goes on behind the scenes in medical departments at football clubs around the

0:30.6

world and you have just listened to that conversation. So what did you make of it? I really enjoyed

0:35.1

0:57.4

job of kind of talking about who has what say. Yeah absolutely and again rather than I was talking

1:02.2

about what he said. The best thing for us to do is just move on and listen to what Callum had to

1:06.3

say to us. So this is Callum Walsh. Back in August, Jürgen Klopp was asked a question about player

1:19.2

welfare and his answer was pretty telling because he said, when I speak about player welfare,

1:24.5

I speak about in general, we have too many competitions, we have too many games in general now.

1:29.9

And the question about physical expectation that is placed on football is now at the forefront

1:33.9

of the media coverage of the game. How much football is too much football? Will the long term

1:38.7

impacts of this as many games, whatever the cost approach start to ruin the spectacle of football

1:43.3

and can anything be done about it? Well fortunately we're drawn by someone who can help us walk through

1:47.6

the problems associated with player fitness. Callum Walsh is a performance manager who's worked

1:52.3

in the Premier League, the championship and at international level as well as in Brazil, Turkey

1:57.0

and Qatar. Callum, thank you so much for coming on today. No worries, thank you very much for having
