where there's quite a lot to get through today, and we will do our best to do so. I'm

going to begin. Well, have you noticed a couple of, we should keep a list, shouldn't we? I'm getting

obsessed with lists. I'm turning into Father Christmas. I kind of find myself increasingly

drawn to subjects, like with a sense of curiosity. I really want to

unravel it. I don't know if you've noticed that I've developed a borderline obsession with the

9.4 million people in this country of working age who are economically inactive. And

economically inactive means neither working nor looking for work in the last

four weeks. That's the most recent definition I could find, which went to the 20-21 census. Now,

if you're new to this program, and if you have some slightly cliched views of what radio phonins

are about, then I should tell you that my immediate impulse, when

presented with a statistic like that, is to feel sympathy for these people, to work upon the

presumption that nobody wants to live a life of inactivity or in the, well, not quite nobody,

but the tiny, tiny, tiny minority of people who perhaps

genuinely prefer a life of indolence
