This is the rot and the power abuse at its core, and it goes back not just the 20 years,

it goes back to the founding in the same ways that when we talk about misogyny, when we talk

about structural sexism, when we talk about structural racism, we're like, yes, this country,

and plenty of other nations too, but let's talk about this country, was fundamentally built

on a series of inequalities around power, around labor, around ownership of bodies, around money, and they involve gendered and racial inequalities.

Hello, and welcome, why is this happening with me, your host, Chris Hayes.

We are in, I don't know, what week we are, what month we are of the Jeffrey Epstein story.

I mean, in some ways, we're in year 20 of the Jeffrey Epstein story.

I think the first time there was reporting about accusations

against him was 20 years ago, 2006, I think was the first year. And we're now, everyone is sifting

through the files that have been disclosed. Three million fires are still being held. Three and a half

million. There are tons of redactions, but even without the redactions, there's lots going on.

And huge reverberations throughout the world, a major labor party politician and fixer is now under fire and had to resign and people associated with them had to resign.

The head of the School of Visual Arts in New York had to resign. The president of Bard College, a legendary, sort of visionary and educator named Leon Botstein,

is under fire for his emails, friendly emails with Jeffrey Epstein.

Howard Lutnik, the Commerce Secretary of Donald Trump's cabinet, who said that he met

Jeffrey Epstein once and was so grossed out, he never saw him again, had to admit that,

in fact, he had actually had lunch with the guy on his island with his whole family and his nannies, plural, but assured the committee that he left the

island with his wife, all his kids, and all his nannies. But also, later on, some associate of

Jeffrey Epstein somehow acquired the resume of one of those nannies. Letnik says he doesn't know

how that happened, but that's a weird little detail.
