Hello and welcome to Not Another One, the podcast with me, Steve Richards, Tim Montgomery, Miranda Green and Ian Martin.

Our main topic today will be an attempt to answer this question.

Has a potential prime minister surfaced in the conservative leadership contest,

the contest which is going on for around 250 years as we speak,

because that is in the end the fundamental question.

The leader of the opposition by the time of the next election will be the only alternative prime minister.

Before that briefly, we always kind of reflect on what's been going on during the week, and we're going to look at the Democrats' Convention.

Now, we're recording this before the speech that many of you will have heard of Kamala Harris,

but we've heard a lot of speeches, and I've found them fascinating,

the degree to which the leading Democrat stars have a confidence about political language,

which I think is lacking at the moment in the UK Labour Party, albeit the Labour Party has just won a landslide.

But their use of language, I'm fascinated that Kamala Harris has seized freedom,

a term favoured often by the right, but could be a potent term for the centre left.

There are other examples as well from the Obamas and the Clintons.

And the power of language to be an advocate for change

and to help people become political teachers

seems very strong at the top of the Democrats at the moment.

Maybe they're going to lose this election,

but that's very strong.
