So we're going to be talking about Israel this week and what feels like a shift in public opinion around the world.

We're seeing it in countries that have been close allies of Israel,

including the United States. For Israeli leaders, it must be causing concern. But before we dive

into that, I wanted to share my own take on something completely different that's dominated the

new cycle this week.

Trump's tariffs.

It has been quite a week, and on Thursday, the day we're taping this, a range of sweeping tariffs went into effect.

Some of these new rates are eye-popping.

Switzerland, 39%.

India, 50%. Taiwan, 20%.

And all of that's in addition to some of the tariffs that had gone into effect earlier.

Think of Canada, 35%.

A few things strike me as puzzling, especially in terms of strategy. First, these are and

remain taxes, at least in part, on Americans, not on the countries that are being

tariffed, but on Americans. And their regressive taxes hurting mostly lower income families. Some percentage of tariffs are

eventually passed on to the consumers in the importing country. That is America, that's Americans.

I speak to a lot of diplomats from other countries. They are completely befuddled as to how this is in

America's interests.
