I'm Patrick Gibbons and today I'm joined by Katie Balls

and Michael Stevens, associate fellow at the Defense and Security Think Tank,

Rousie. Now, fallout has continued from the UK's decision to suspend some arms

sale licenses to Israel yesterday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the decision as

shameful, but the Defence Secretary John Healy has defended the decision and

insisted that the UK remains a staunch ally. Katie, what's been going on?

Yeah, so this all goes back, when the Labour government came in, they launched a review of Israel's

compliance for international law.

And of course this is a complex subject for the Labour Party. You know you can say law is black and white,

it's very simple, either Israel and it's used these weapons is in conflict with international

law and UK law or it is not. But I think you do have to take into account the different

dynamics of the Tory government to the Labour government. In the Labour Party we know

that there is much more of a pro Palestine concern about Israel,

and whether it's taken to things too far

since the Hamas attack.
