Hey, everybody. I'm so glad you're with us today. We have a fascinating topic to tackle,

0:13.0

and I'm just going to read the title of this new study out on the news. And you'll get an idea about where we're going caught in a dangerous

0:23.2

world problematic news consumption and its relationship to mental and physical ill-being.

0:31.8

You know, at smarter news, one of the things that we talk about is building a solution in news.

0:36.3

And in order to build a solution in news, we have to talk a lot about the problem. What is the things that we talk about is building a solution in news. And in order to build a solution

0:38.1

in news, we have to talk a lot about the problem. What is the problem that we're trying to solve?

0:43.0

And one of the problems that I've seen in the news industry from the inside, but also as a consumer,

0:47.9

is that news is just hard. It isn't easy to get the news. That's the number one question I've always received as a

0:56.6

journalist. Where do you go to get the news? Because people just want the news. They just want to

1:00.0

know what's happening. They don't want all the arguments, the aggravation, the partisanship.

1:06.6

And there's a feeling that's attached to news delivery right now.

1:11.5

And I would think that this has actually been over the last several years.

1:14.8

That's really negative, you know, watching the news seems like a loaded proposition rather than

1:21.2

something that you just do to get the news and then move on with your life.

1:23.9

And so with smarter news, that's one of the things that we've tried to do.

1:26.2

Quick and concise, nonpartisan information. We'll give you the stories so then you can get on living your story, which is what we want to help support. Because if we support you with good nonpartisan information, then you feel informed and then you can go about your day. And that's what we want for you is more freedom, more liberty to do that. So when I saw this study, I reached right out to the team because I had to understand more about what they learned.

1:51.0

And we're really lucky today because Professor Brian McLaughlin is with us here from Texas Tech University.

1:57.4

He is the lead author of this study, ProfessorLaughlin. Is that, is that correct?

2:03.5

That's correct. Yes. And so tell me, how did you even decide to to tackle this topic? I'm sure

2:10.0

there's a million topics in media that you could tackle. Why problematic news? Well, the short

2:16.4

answer is personal experience.

2:21.1

We're going to, I'm going to write that down.
