Summary

This episode started as a part of our warmup conversation for Wednesday’s episode, and it ended up taking on a life of it’s own. Does organized religion install morality or is it already there? Which social structures actually create community? What role does lifting play in your life?

Avi Lieu, a USAPL pro powerlifter, joins us for this discussion. You can find Avi on Instagram @avi.lieu and Tiktok @avi.lieu

Hey, this is Jim. So this is actually a pre episode discussion that really turned into a short

0:06.5

episode of its own. A content was good enough that I didn't want to toss it out. It was definitely

0:11.6

very off the cuff and behind the scenes and weren't necessarily structuring things the way

0:16.2

that we normally do in conversation. But I thought this one was worthwhile, good insight

0:21.6

on who we are as people, I think. So we're going to throw it up here as a Friday episode

0:28.9

with Avi.

0:58.9

I'm going to play a game that I'm going to play as a player. I was watching other people

1:06.8

as a player. I was going to every game I could. I went to three practices. I would go to

1:12.0

the JV. I played varsity all four years and the JV coach was homies with me and my dad.

1:16.3

I would go to the JV, get a run in, then drive to my practice. Sometimes the varsity

1:21.2

girls coach was a really close friend of mine and I would stay and help them.

1:25.8

How did you have time to do anything? All I did was play basketball.

1:29.5

Have a school. Yeah, homeward. I'm smart, didn't you?

1:31.7

Yeah, that's smart. I'm pretty smart. You don't have to spend time studying. You can naturally

1:37.2

smart. Kind of. School. I got through pretty decent. Yeah, without a lot of hours.

1:43.1

I had to try really hard to be mediocre. The only thing I would wonder if is that they

1:48.0

forced time. So if it was just tests, like a regular school, I would have been a 4.0.

1:53.2

But in my school, you got to draw on shit and that literally is time. It doesn't matter

1:56.8

how good you are. You still have to draw all this shit and handwrite your essays. We're

2:00.8

like a normal school. If you understand the curriculum enough, you don't have to put

2:05.6

time outside of it. This one literally, whether you're good or bad,

2:08.4

you have to put fucking time in. You got to make clay sculptures and shit.
