Summary

B Corp certification is meant to signal that a company is socially and environmentally conscious. The logo graces the packaging and advertising of anything, from shoes and snacks, to steak houses. But as the movement nears nearly 10,000 companies globally, and includes multinational food and beverage giants, is it getting too big to be meaningful?

Hello, welcome to Business Daily from the BBC World Service. I'm Josh Martin. Today, is there a

0:06.6

backlash against B-Corps? The certification is meant to signal that a company is socially and

0:11.8

environmentally conscious. And the B-Corp logo graces the packaging and advertising of everything

0:17.3

from shoes and snacks to steakhouses. When I see a bee, the logo, I know exactly what that business has gone through,

0:24.6

and I've massive respect for any business that has.

0:27.6

1:11.9

assessing its commitment to the environment, its workers and suppliers, and wider society.

1:17.0

This whole process is certified by a non-profit organisation called B-Lab. You may have seen

1:21.4

similar business accreditations such as fair trade or living wage employer. B-corps, though,

1:26.7

like to think they're a little bit more

1:27.9

holistic than those single issue certifications. So how many black and white logos are proudly

1:33.8

plastered on the packaging from my recent trip to the supermarket? Well, we've got yoghurt. There's the

1:40.8

certified B-Lab logo right there on the back.
