Summary

In their final summer Q&A, Beth, Ruth, and Harriet dig into why politics feels permanently stuck in panic mode.

Why does it feel like there's an election imminent when the prime minister isn't required to call one for four years? What's fuelling the chaos? And is the media to blame?

Plus, your questions on whether Reform defections are actually a problem for the Tory party, what happens to ex-MPs, and could Donald Trump actually win the Nobel Peace Prize?

Remember, you can also watch us on YouTube.

I've got a dream. As people across the nation just switch off, I go, oh, bloody hell. They're just like, oh, shut up, shut up, you smug it. Shut up. Nick, most important question, are you going for a one piece or a two piece? I always, ever since the children, Ruth, it's a one piece for me. What about you? To be honest, actually Beth, I'm going to Ireland, to more likely wetsuit. Oh, you're being in a wetsuit. You'll be in a wetsuit under an umbrella. Enjoy it.

So let's crack on with this. We have a Q&A session for you. I'm kind of like the emcee on this because it's really, this is the Harriet and Ruth show. And I'm very happy because I've got half a croissant I need to finish eating. So this is good. First up is Sue. I have a question about ex-MPs. When someone wins Wimbledon, they made a member for life and get free Centacourt tickets year. Do ex-MPs get a lifetime House of Commons pass?

1:48.3

Are they allowed in?

1:52.4

Are the corridors swamped with sad-looking Ntonians turning up for a cheap pint?

1:53.7

Or is that it?

1:56.5

They're out, barred, never coming in again?

2:22.7

Well, I'm very overexcited, over-stimulated by this question from Sue, because all things to do with the institution of Parliament, no matter how detail, kind of, I find me, you know, I've got to sort myself out on this. But anyway, Sue, the whole thing about being an MP is it's very like institutional living. It's where, you know, you eat, you socialise as well as work, and therefore it is very brutal if suddenly the voters decide to chuck you out.

2:32.8

And MPs are given a pass for life afterwards to come into the House of Commons, but there's certain areas that they can't actually go into.

2:37.0

But actually, one of the things that can be done is, like for example, with Boris Johnson after the Privileges Committee inquiry, which I chaired,

2:43.0

we proposed to Parliament that he be denied his life past as part of his punishment
