Elon Musk has told this story a couple of times, but it's good context.

Larry and Paige and I used to be very close friends and I would stay at his house and I'd

talk to Larry into the late hours of the night about AI safety. It's the story of what

motivated him to invest in AI. So many, many years ago, Larry Page of Google had just scooped up

deep mind, a cutting edgeedge AI company founded by Mustafa

Suleiman, who I have interviewed on this podcast.

But here's how Musk told the story at the New York Times Deal Book Summit last year.

And it became apparent to me that Larry did not care about AI safety. I think

perhaps the thing that gave it away was when he called me a specious for being pro-humanity,

as in, you know, like a race, but for species. So I'm like, wait a second.
