Summary

Ever since he was diagnosed as a kid, Adam has wondered if ADHD is a serious psychological condition, or a false diagnosis pushed by an overzealous industry. This week Dr. Stephen Hinshaw, Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley is on the show to help answer these questions. You can check out his book The ADHD Explosion: Myths, Medication, Money, and Today's Push for Performance at factuallypod.com/books. Learn more about your ad choices. Hello everyone, welcome to Factually, I'm

0:29.8

Adam Connover. Thanks again for joining me and listening to the show. I'd like to talk about something a little bit personal today.

0:36.8

Maybe I've discussed this on the show before, but never a great length. It's something that's really a part of myself.

0:41.8

Something I've struggled with for a long time, and let's just jump into it.

It was later called ADHD, but you know, I was really early and they hadn't put in the H yet.

You know, my main memory as a child was people telling me that I wasn't able to focus.

1:17.8

My dad telling me focus on your objective, which isn't, you know, an odd thing to tell a five year old.

1:22.8

You know, people say, Adam, you're jumping out of your chair so much, that kind of thing.

1:26.8

I don't remember not being able to focus. I remember adults telling me that I couldn't.

1:32.8

Until eventually, they said I was so disruptive that they took me to see a psychiatrist.

1:37.8

And that psychiatrist diagnosed me with ADD and they prescribed me with Ritalin.

1:42.8

And I took Ritalin for many, many years that I was in school.

1:46.8

I actually don't remember that much about it quite oddly.

1:49.8

I think I stopped taking it at one point.

1:51.8

Then a couple years later, when I was in college, I found for the first time I was actually starting to struggle to focus on things that I wanted to focus on.

1:59.8

I was not able to do the reading that I wanted to do even as much as I wanted to do it.

2:05.8

And so I went to see another psychiatrist and they confirmed my diagnosis and they gave me Adderall.
