Summary

Taking a look at the Michigan basketball team, we break down the Wolverines’ win over Michigan State, and what it means moving forward.

First, we look at what some of the keys to Michigan’s win. We dissect improved defense from Franz Wagner, Eli Brooks and the entire team, how far the Wolverines’ bench has come, the positive impact on the stat sheet and beyond that Isaiah Livers’ return to the lineup can bring. We also look at some schematic changes, and the team’s energy in the surprising win.

We then break down what the Wolverines’ final eight games look like, and where Michigan still needs to improve to come out on top. Among the areas discussed include consistent shooting, more offensive production from Jon Teske, more reliable showings from the Wolverines’ sophomore class and furthering some recent trends. We then close by looking at Michigan’s bracketology breakdown, and other notes to watch in Michigan’s pursuit of the NCAA Tournament.

Hello everybody. Welcome to the Wolverine 24-7 podcast, your audio source for all things Michigan football, basketball, and recruiting. I'm your host, Axisaw. Steve Lorenz is here with me. You can read all of our stuff at the Michiganinsider.com and Michigan.24-7 sports.com. This is a basketball podcast. We'll talk about Michigan's big win over Michigan State, kind of what it means, because it means a lot.

0:21.7

You know, it's not just a big win. It's a big win kind of in the face of things going not so well.

0:29.0

And so what it means, what it entails, the carryover effect, maybe reassessing how these final seven regular season games look, maybe previewing a little bit

0:40.6

of that, and then we'll also talk a little bit about where things are with Michigan in the

0:45.5

brackets. So lots to cover, not a lot of time to do it. Steve, Michigan beat Michigan State

0:51.8

by nine. Certainly, there were some back and forth. I mean,

0:55.8

it wasn't like a complete pancing, but I felt like Michigan played. It's, frankly, I know they

1:00.9

beat Gonzaga by 18, and that's going to look like a bigger win, but I think Gonzaga had

1:05.3

enough new contributors, new parts that it wasn't known. I think they were still figuring themselves out a little

1:12.1

bit. I think this is Michigan's biggest win of the year and their best game of the year. I think

1:16.4

the defense in the opening 10 minutes, I think Michigan State had five points in the first 10

1:21.1

minutes, the fact that Cassius Winston really never got into a groove, the fact that nobody else

1:26.6

on Michigan State really played well at all.

1:30.5

And then the fact that the shooting came, Isaiah Liver stepped up.

1:33.8

It seemed like every player, all eight players who played,

1:37.3

made at least two or three clutch plays,

1:39.5

even if it was grabbing a loose ball or grabbing a big rebound,

1:47.3

making a really smart pass, making a big shot.

1:48.7

It just seemed like a very complete connected team.

1:51.3

I mean, I think it's the thing that Michigan fans had been waiting for, really all of 2020,

1:57.1

is when were they going to truly show up?

1:59.5

Now, they had a nice win over Rutgers, and they had a nice win over, well, they beat Nebraska
