Summary

Keir Starmer announced a u-turn on winter fuel payments in the face of growing backbench discontent this week. There’s also speculation more than 100 Labour MPs will rebel against benefit cuts. Meanwhile, there’s already speculation that Tory MPs might move against Kemi Badenoch. Are MPs more disloyal than they used to be or do they have more cause for insurrection against incompetent party leaderships?

Hello and welcome to not another one with me, Steve Richards, Tim Montgomery, Miranda Green and down the line, Ian Martin. Thank you very much for joining us. And what we thought we would discuss in our time

0:22.0

together is the degree to which both the so-called main parties, perhaps that's the wrong

0:29.1

term in the current Fibrile situation, face really significant revolts and what that tells us

0:36.0

about them and the state of politics. Just to explain, obviously,

Let's begin with the government party.

1:21.5

It seems to me, Miranda, that one way in which the government is going to address the discontent amongst MPs following those local elections and the by-election is they're going to do something about winter fuel.

1:37.4

Do you agree? And will that be enough to calm the parliamentary Labour Party down?

1:43.7

I think it would help. And I'm delighted that they're going to do it,

1:47.3

not least because it implies they listened to our podcast,

1:49.6

because I think we suggested it a couple of weeks ago.

1:52.2

So there we are, follow our policy prescriptions and survive.

1:56.0

I think it'll be fair to say we aren't the only people.

2:00.0

Come on. Let's take the credit. It wasn't just as we aren't the only people. Come on.

2:03.3

Let's take the credit.

2:04.1

Let's take the credit. Was it just us who came up with this idea?

2:06.2

Yes, it was.

2:07.2

Yes, it was.
