Summary

With a slowing economy, soaring energy costs and mounting pressure on defense spending, PM Giorgia Meloni faces an uphill battle in next year’s Italian election. Amid all this, Zoya and Ian discuss how a recent European Commission decision to exempt certain green investments from its public-spending rules is a small win for the Italian leader. They dig deeper into the thought process behind this move from the EU executive. Also on the show, we break down some of the recent developments as Brussels tightens the screws on Moscow. One of the updates is that ministers from 11 countries are calling for restrictions on the number of EU tourist visas issued to Russian nationals. And finally: What on earth is a Spritz Misto? We uncover the mystery of a cocktail that has Brussels scratching its head — and an MEP up in arms. Do you have a favorite cocktail and a preferred place in Brussels to order it? Let us know on our WhatsApp here or at +32 491 05 06 29. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nothing. It's perfection. Tell me how to make it again, all of the steps.

1:03.0

All right, Ian, let's talk Italy first. We haven't done that much on the pod around Rome, so it's time.

1:09.1

Now, there's a reason why we're talking about Italy.

1:11.4

It's because Georgia Maloney is facing election in 2027.

1:14.6

That's the other big election.

1:16.3

It's not just France that's going to the polls.

1:19.5

And she's in kind of a bit of trouble.

1:22.0

She is.

1:23.4

The economy in Italy is not doing so great, is it?

1:26.0

And it's been really badly impacted by the war in

1:28.7

Iran, basically because Italy, I think more than any other country in Europe, imports so much

1:34.7

fossil fuels. And that's obviously been hit by the blockades in the straight of Hormuz and the

1:40.8

Italian economy has really gone downhill. Yeah, and that's not the only thing that's been hitting Italy. It's also been Trump tariffs. And you would think that Georgia Maloney, who is one of Trump's big admirers in the EU, one of his closest buds, you would think that that might stop Italy. Are they close friends now, though? Well, friends of convenience. I mean, I guess Donald Trump doesn't have a lot of friends. He doesn't go to his son's wedding.

2:01.6

No. Why we're talking about this today is because of the announcement, the economic announcements that the commission made yesterday.

2:08.5

Yeah, that's right. So this is in the spring semester package. And basically, what happened was that the EU rulebook limits budget deficits to 3% of economic output. But there's going to be a

concession that the Commission has announced, assuming it gets up, which is going to exempt some

green investments from those rules for public spending. So just for our listeners, in case they
