So, do we need a national service for everyone?

Different countries have experimented with this over the years.

Back in the 80s, I lived in Germany.

I was living at the headquarters of the Salem International Organization,

Salem International.org, and they had a little, not quite a hospital, it was a health center.

There, you know, with a physician and a nurse and probably two dozen or so beds as it were.

These little health centers are just kind of scattered all over Germany.

There were a couple of young men there who were doing their military service

or doing their public service, their national service, by volunteering to work with the hospital.

Because at that time, and I'm not sure what the law in Germany is right now, frankly.

But at that point in time, when you got out of high school, you had to serve one year.

You had to give one year of service to your country.

The majority of young men, and this was just men.
