In this podcast, I want to answer a question I received regarding shellfish. Is it ok to consume shellfish even though they may contain heavy metals?

A few really good things about shellfish like shrimp, lobster, and crab are:  • They’re loaded with minerals and trace minerals. • They’re high in omega-3 fatty acids. • They’re high-quality sources of protein. • They contain selenium which helps to detox mercury and other heavy metals.

However, shellfish also contain heavy metals like mercury and even lead. For this reason, you should:  • Not consume them that often (maybe 1x per week). • Not consume them at all if you’re pregnant. • Get your trace minerals from organic sea kelp harvested from a very healthy part of the world.  • Choose wild-caught instead of farm-raised.

A few of the worst fish to eat because of heavy metals, specifically mercury contamination, are:  • Shark • King mackerel • Swordfish
