And indeed, thank you for all your kind words this week

about our attempts to navigate incredibly difficult territory

without causing any unnecessary offence.

And I use the word unnecessary there

because I don't think you can have any conversations about this issue

without potentially upsetting somebody.

And that is a necessary condition for having these conversations. Having said that, I was wondering what to do today. I was wondering whether we could distill the situation down to a single, simple question. And I think we can. I was a little bit reluctant to do so because it's

bleak. But that's me being a little bit shy, I think, of bleakness. It occurs to me that the question now really

is whether or not Israel is permitted and encouraged to do whatever she wants.

And I was reluctant to ask that question because, well, I thought it was an intellectual exercise, not just on my part.
