There's an old story that for his 13th birthday in 1876, Henry Ford was given a pocket watch.

Most young boys would have proudly worn and used such a gift. But young Henry got some tools and took it apart.

He wanted to know how it worked.

It's little wonder then that Henry Ford, many years later,

revolutionized car manufacturing in the United States and is still celebrated as one of his centuries' most important figures.

Whether it's true or not, the story about the watch illustrates a thread that is part of our

cultural heritage as Americans, curiosity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The many amenities that make our lives so much easier and comfortable, jetliners, medical

treatments, air conditioning, the internet, these things were created by people putting their

skill and ingenuity to work, sometimes with obsessive energy. And yet, in our cultural moment,

there is a suspicion towards the financial success that such innovation brings.

Some see wealth as evidence of exploitation and nothing more.

They see the free market itself as oppressive.
