However, despite increased diplomatic efforts, the globe is already experiencing the effects of climate

change and things are only going to get worse.

Countries committed to lowering greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement,

but as carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere continue to rise, the Earth is warming up alarmingly. In this topic, we discussed with Natasha Gerda, head of research at Astyria.

Natasha, is carbon emissions reduction sufficient to achieve the goal set by the Paris Agreement?

Natasha, is carbon emissions reduction sufficient to achieve the goals set by the Paris Agreement?

No, reducing carbon emissions alone is not sufficient to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

While it really plays a significant role in addressing climate change, the Paris Agreement consists of a broader range of actions.

So just as a reminder, the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015, and the main goal is to reduce levels of global greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to keep the global average temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius.

And this is compared to the pre-industrialization levels.

So this is the global temperature rise limits

sets by scientists, above which the climate change

will result in catastrophic and potentially irreversible changes.

But because of the complexity and the scale of the climate crisis, we need a comprehensive strategy to achieve this goal.

And while reducing carbon emission is critical or a critical component, it will require multiple approaches.
