Summary

Mattthew Sponhour is back for another STAY HOT SHOT to discuss Cam Newton past and present and whether or not he can hold on the starting QB job in New England for the whole season. Matt starts us off by getting into the common misconceptions about Cam in Carolina and how he got nearly all the blame during his time there. Was it his fault? Did he have the weapons needed to win? Then, he gives us the truth about Cam's accuracy issues. Last year he was dealing with shoulder issues and Covid, can he get back to his former self both health wise and gain a bit more accuracy? If so, will he hold on to that starting job and what is the outlook for the new look Pats this year? What's up guys? Welcome back to another stay hot shot. I'm Matthew Sponauer. And today we're

0:08.0

going to be talking about Cam Newton and I think the misconception about how his career has gone up

0:12.8

until this point. One, two, three, hello.

0:17.6

Newton makes a handoff, spreads right? Still on his feet, Cam Newton, touchdown!

0:23.6

Newton, good.

0:25.6

Leaping for the end zone.

0:27.6

Greg, he really was Superman on that plate.

0:30.6

He's taking a deep shot down the field.

0:32.6

He's got burned down there!

0:33.6

What a catch!

0:34.6

He's going to air that deep downfield.

0:38.2

The record setter.

0:39.6

The general conception about Cam Newton is that he was talented but super inconsistent.

0:44.5

But I would say as a Panthers fan who watched him his entire career, it was the Panthers

0:49.4

teams who were inconsistent, not just Cam Newton.

0:52.3

There were definitely a lot of ups and downs through his time with Carolina. I'm not going to deny it. But there was also a lot of times where they gave him a roster that I don't think any quarterback was going to succeed with. After Steve Smith was let go, he had his number one wide receivers be guys like Kelvin Benjamin, Ted Ginn, and Devin Funches. Offensively, they never had a very creative game plan. Typically, he didn't have a very good offensive line, particularly after Jordan Gross ended up retiring. So there were large portions of his time with Carolina where he didn't have offensive line, wide receivers are good play calling. And in spite of that, the Panthers were still a competitive team, and that's because of Cam Newton, not in spite of them. But typically it's Cam Newton getting the blame when the team loses, and that's how it is with all quarterbacks to some extent. But the 15 and 1 Super Bowl loss season is probably the best example of that. That team was extremely good, but when it came down to the Super Bowl, the offensive line played like garbage, he had no time to throw. It was just a disaster all around game. But mainly the blame is placed squarely on Cam Newton, at least by most non-Panthers fans. And maybe that's because of the one fluky play where it looks like he's not even trying to get the ball on a loose fumble, or if it's because

2:00.9

people were just tired of hearing about Cam Newton and wanted to trash him, I'm not sure. But regardless, I can tell you that Cam Newton is not the reason why the Panthers lost that game. The offensive line is the reason why the Panthers lost that game. But the most frustrating part about that play is that it created the narrative that he isn't a tough player when I don't think I've seen anybody else take more hits that sent them to the

2:00.8

sideline just to come back out and finish the game.

2:22.3

As far as specific complaints go, an accuracy has been a problem somewhat for Cam Newton.

2:27.3

But it's definitely over-exaggerated, particularly earlier in his career.

2:32.3

Like in 2018, for example, he got up to a great start before

2:35.1

his shoulder started bothering him halfway through the season, and even then he finished top 10
