Pulpit. And the question we're asking is, is California still a golden state? We have two

terrific guests. John Chang served as California's 33rd state treasurer from 2015 to 2019.

Prior to being treasurer, he served a state controller from 2007 through 2014.

And I'm proud to say that he was a fall 2020 fellow at the Center for the Political Future.

David Crane is the president of Governed for California,

a lecturer in public policy at Stanford University.

He was a special advisor to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger from 2004 to 2010.

He's written extensively and has often been cited on the subjects of government accountability,

pension funding, government finance and investment policies, political reform, and more generally,

the quality of governance in the state of California. So I'm going to throw out the first question,

And the reason that California has become less well governed than it used to be, part of it is this dramatic growth and probably the most complex, you know, population in the country, if not the world, but also for about five decades,
