Long Bridge, a big day for the Littland.

This is the two million's mini in company with some of those who helped make

the pint-sized people car into an international achievement. As it came off the production line,

British Leyland's general manager George Turnbull and newly knighted to Alec Isigonis,

designer of the mini, drove it into motoring history as the first British car ever told

past to the incredible production figure.

Well, in a way, that takes me back.

Not that far, because obviously I don't go about that far, but just talking about Longbridge,

the famous, the iconic car plant, I grew up in the shadow of it.

And my dad worked at it, not when that clip is from, but years later for 10, 15 years,

on the factory floor there as a welder.

And obviously, Rover folded a long time ago.

It folded back in 2005, and it was a huge political story at the time.

But the weird thing was, that was a tale of failure, whilst actually in the 15 years or so

or 10 years or so after that, the British car industry overall was this amazing success story.

In 2016, we produced more cars in Britain than ever before.

And hearing the news this morning, which is really quite shocking,

that the number of new cars made in the UK sunk to its lowest level for 66 years, since

1956, since before the mini was actually first put into production, revolutionising the British car industry,

it really sort of brought all those sort of memories of the
