Summary

Have you ever convinced yourself that being disorganised is an essential part of the creative process - but get constantly frustrated by looking for images or planning projects? "If I'm tidy I'm not a true artist" is one belief Anna Macdonald had. Today Anna and Alice talk about accepting the way you are and how to find the mental space to support your route to becoming the artist you want to be.

We talk about choosing your words carefully, and the curse of being 'busy'. There's a difference between being busy and productive and as a teacher, artist and mum, Anna shares her approach which has allowed her to develop her art and life. We discuss the different ways we use a bullet journal, and also the overwhelm when it comes into organising our digital life.

we're told a lot that we shouldn't multitask. But I just I don't think it was a mom that said that it was probably a

Buddhist that said that a Buddhist monk said I'm sure I read that you mustn't multitask and I thought yeah you definitely don't have two children and a job.

This is honest, generous and humorous conversations that will feed your creative soul and get you thinking with me Alice Sheridan, usually Louise Fletcher, but today I'm joined by an artist friend who, as is always the way these days, I met online, I think, through Instagram, I think through Instagram I think and we have met a good number of times in real life I'm

joined by Anna McDonald's hello Anna and we just thought that we would get together and have a little bit of a chat about the realities of

organizing yourself as an artist. I think people have a perception that I'm very organized and I think like lots of us I think I probably have some areas that I'm organized in and then I have some others that are very, very decidedly weak spots but it's one of the things that we have to sort of grapple with not just as an artist but in life right?

1:27.2

Yeah, definitely and I find this topic of organizing is so interesting in terms of being an artist because I grew up thinking

1:37.7

that artists were inherently disorganized and that was part of the creative process and therefore if I was quite a tidy person that meant I wouldn't be a creative, you know, true creative.

1:50.0

And so I felt like that up until probably about eight years ago.

1:55.2

I just thought, oh, I'm just pretending to be an artist because really I'm not because I'm quite tidy and I quite

2:01.1

like tidying things up.

2:02.8

But this whole kind of exploring this idea

2:05.2

about being tidy and are we a tidy person

2:08.9

or are we a chaotic person,

2:10.3

it's just so fascinating and I think it covers every aspect of our lives really

2:16.1

Before we get into that even further I just want to go a little bit more into so for people who don't know you where can they find you on

2:24.4

Instagram I'm Anna F McDonald art so if you hop over to Instagram you will get very

2:32.3

immediately a sense of Anna's kind of

2:35.7

aesthetic and approach to the way that not only that she makes her art but she also lives

2:41.0

her life but the other thing that we've got in common is we are both mums of two children and you also have a job as well. Tell us a little bit about what a usual week looks like for you.

2:53.4

I raise this down.

2:55.2

Right.

2:56.2

Why is it chaotic?
